I checked out the cost of a 0.5 carat flawless D grade diamond from several well known showrooms, providing certificates from different people. The cost varies from Rs. 37,500 to Rs. 1,25,000. Why is that so?|||It has to do a lot with the retailer's overhead (like rent, employees etc) to how much they want to profit.
Cheapest place to buy diamonds would be with one of the reputable online retailers like http://www.jamesallen.com or http://www.diamond.com.
They could probably save you 30%-40%
